Loghain What Are You Doing

this is not how you handle a rebellion
Bodahn's rumors aren't in the toolset, which is annoying as heck, because there's an entire political plotline hidden in the endless loop of "that's what I've heard on the road anyhow"; and no one wants to deal with that. But I ended up poking at it out of curiousity and wow there's a lot of stuff here. Each paragraph is a separate rumor soundbite from Bodahn. Originally on Pillowfort, but I want to cross-post it here for posterity.
It all starts with post-Ostagar unrest and reactions (I think these are always available):
After you do the first main quest, things get hairy:
And after the second, people just start fighting outright:
Things start getting really interesting once you're about halfway through (third main quest):
After the fourth is when I finally took notice of these banters, and the whole thing is just a mess. I thought these four were all there were at first, and initially went back to try and see how the timeline went (poorly, that's how).
And after the last quest:
Just. Look at all this. It's no wonder the Warden needs to get their own army - I'm surprised Ferelden had any soldiers left to fight! Loghain clearly knows how to win battles, but priorities, man.
Misc notes:
Caer Bronach and Caer Oswin both appear in Inquisition. Caer Bronach, the keep in Crestwood is inhabited by bandits before the Inquisition steps in, which does not bode well for the Bann's fate. Caer Oswin is the site of the Order of Fiery Promise in Cassandra's personal quest, in the northern bannorn. It is controlled by Bann Loren, he of the Bann Loren's Lands quest in Return to Ostagar - almost adjacent to Kinloch Hold, and nowhere near the map location of Caer Oswin. Presumably, Loren got Valdric's land for being loyal to Loghain and Valdric got strung up on a pole.
Iachus Valley and Winter's Breath aren't anywhere in the games, though there's a couple nice staffs named Winter's Breath in Origins.
Seriously Loghain what the fuck.

It all starts with post-Ostagar unrest and reactions (I think these are always available):
There's another royal army already gathering in the east, but from what I hear, when it marches it'll be headed west - not south towards the darkspawn. Can you imagine? If the bannorn stand up against Loghain, we won't need the darkspawn to destroy us. We'll do their work for them!
It seems that some of the banns just won't accept Teyrn Loghain's orders. There's too much talk still of King Cailan's death, and questions about what happened. You'd think with the darkspawn knocking on our doorstep people would be more likely to stand together, wouldn't you?
After you do the first main quest, things get hairy:
Teyrn Loghain had one of the bannorn arrested for speaking out against him. Arrested! Can you imagine such a thing? It seems this bann was talking treason, about how Loghain needed to be forcibly removed from the throne... but arrested? How can you arrest one of the bannorn?
And after the second, people just start fighting outright:
There's been another clash of forces, this time north of Lothering. Both the bannorn and Loghain are saying they won this clash, so we're not sure exactly what happened yet. From the sounds of it, I think the forces accidentally crossed each other and began fighting. What a bloody mess.
There's terrible news. Everyone is talking about a battle in the north between Loghain's men and Bann Bronach. The bann was utterly crushed. Someone told me that he was meeting with Loghain to talk terms, but I don't believe it. Surely Loghain would never attack someone attempting to parley!
Teyrn Loghain has announced that what happened to Bann Bronach will happen to any other noble who doesn't live up to the oath he swore to serve the throne. There's a lot of folks angry about it. Some of the bannorn who weren't saying anything are now saying that Loghain is trampling on their rights as sovereign lords. Seems like more fighting is inevitable at this point, doesn't it? Sad state of affairs.
Things start getting really interesting once you're about halfway through (third main quest):
There's been a battle out at Winter's Breath. Several of the bannorn banded together and fought against Loghain's men, maybe a thousand on the field all told. Teyrn Loghain won the day, it's said, but there were heavy losses on both sides. It's a fight for the throne, just like in the old times.
Queen Anora issued a plea to the bannorn to stand down, lest there be a repeat of Winter's Breath elsewhere. I don't think they're listening, though. Many of them think Anora isn't even really the one speaking. They say the queen does what her father tells her. Can't say I blame them.
After the fourth is when I finally took notice of these banters, and the whole thing is just a mess. I thought these four were all there were at first, and initially went back to try and see how the timeline went (poorly, that's how).
It seems a group of Loghain's men were ambushed yesterday near Highever. I don't know who did it, but the men were hit while they were camping for the night. The whole lot of them taken by surprise. Their tents were set on fire with arrows, and I hear over two dozen died. Nasty business.
Mmm. It seems that Teyrn Loghain has responded to the ambush on his men near Highever. Group of his best hunted down the ones who did it. All of them hunters out of Oswin, Bann Valdric's men. I hear Teyrn Loghain ordered them all strung up on poles. Then they were left up there to starve, pleading for mercy. I hope that isn't true. That's a grim thing to do to someone.
There's outrage over what Teyrn Loghain did to the hunters out of Oswin. Letting a man starve, helpless? I think Teyrn Loghain meant that to be a lesson, to make everyone think twice about continuing this fight. It's going to do exactly the opposite, you ask me.
Heard from a dwarf the other day that smoke was rising over Oswin. Revolt, he says. Teyrn Loghain is trying to put it down as we speak, but I understand it's not going well.
And after the last quest:
There's been another battle. A bunch of the bannorn met Loghain at Iachus Valley, and from the sound of it, the bannorn outnumbered him. Teyrn Loghain is a force to be reckoned with, though. Just ask the Orlesians. I hear the bannorn were routed. It's a convincing victory for the throne. I wonder if that will settle the issue now... but somehow I have my doubts.
The bannorn are on the run now... There's no way that they can force Teyrn Loghain to resign the throne. But how the teyrn is going to raise a proper army now is anyone's guess.
There are soldiers throughout the valley now and Teyrn Loghain arrested three banns. But I hear there's common folk rioting throughout the kingdom. No one will accept the teyrn as the regent now. Can you imagine that? A month ago he was a hero, and now? I'm beginning to wonder if the rumors about him are true.
Just. Look at all this. It's no wonder the Warden needs to get their own army - I'm surprised Ferelden had any soldiers left to fight! Loghain clearly knows how to win battles, but priorities, man.
